On a beautiful evening, the Music School opened up its doors for the final time before the holiday with its celebration of the 2017/18 academic year, Music for a Summer’s Evening. In this performance, many of the school’s ensembles came together for a fantastic night of music, showcasing the impressive developments made by Millfield students throughout the year as musicians and performers.
It was great to see some of the Music School’s newer ensembles performing; the recently formed Stanford Scholars gave a beautiful rendition of The Blue Bird, whilst the Millfield Four came together to perform a selection of sacred and secular vocal works. In particular, it was brilliant to see Dr. David Burton perform with the ensemble; Dr. Burton will be leaving Millfield School after over 30 years of service, and has sang with the school choir since 1982. It was wonderful for him to join the ensemble in their performance of The Silver Swan by Orlando Gibbons.
This concert featured performances from the brilliantly talented musicians of Millfield Prep School. A selection of the school’s musicians came together in the Edgarley Ensemble, performing a lively latin number, whilst the percussion ensemble showcased their considerable musicality and ensemble skills. The group then joined with the Senior School percussion ensemble for a rousing performance of Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance.
The night once again showcased the fantastic vocal skills of Millfield students. Camerata gave a varied performance of music that they are taking on tour to Tuscany this summer, whilst Millfield Chorale sang a selection of repertoire featuring everything from Edward Elgar to music from the show ‘Rent’.
The instrumental ensembles once again shone throughout the night. Brass Ensemble gave a rousing rendition of a Russian folk tune, whilst String Ensemble showcased a variety of movie and show repertoire from Les Miserables to The Godfather. The movie theme was continued in the Orchestra’s performance, who brought the evening to a close with an energetic performance of music from Star Wars ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.
The brilliant music, summer dress code and the ample provision with Pimms and prosecco combined to make the evening a memorable one. It has been a wonderful year at Millfield Music School, and we are looking forward to more of the same in the 2018/19 academic year.
