Evening Recital 14/05 – The Review

Following a week in which the best of our ensembles were celebrated in Music at Millfield, the attention of Millfield Music School turned to our solo performers in the final Evening Recital of the year. It was the opportunity for many of our finest performers, from Year 9 to Upper Sixth, to showcase their talents in a fantastic evening of high quality music making.

It was fantastic to see a number of younger students performing so impressively in this setting. Year 10 Emily Paterson played a Faure melody for Cello with great musicality, whilst a couple of Year 9’s showed remarkable precocity in their performances; Esme Ellis singing an aria from Mozart’s ‘Marriage of Figaro’ and Jo Maddock playing a wonderful Arietta for Piano.

There was a notable variety of music performed during the evening, particularly from the Music School’s fine selection of vocalists. From the traditional setting of ‘Take O Take Those Lips Away’ presented by Elenice Andrews, to Greg Wills performance of the show classic ‘Ol’ Man River’ and Isabelle Barber’s classy rendition of a French romantic song, the audience were treated to a range of styles throughout the evening.

In the final Evening Recital of the year, it was wonderful to see such a fine selection of Upper Sixth perform in their final term at the school. Bethan Close opened the show with a wonderful performance of Henri Duparc’s ‘Extase’, whilst Travis Titley took on Bruckner’s ‘Ave Maria’ on Trombone with great skill and control.

In the second half of the programme, Harry Kemp gave a powerful and assured performance of a Brahms lied, a notoriously difficult genre to pull of, whilst Ornella Hutchison played Brahms’ fabulous Intermezzo for Piano in A with wonderful flow and feeling. We are extremely excited to hear all these fabulous musicians perform again, along with a number of other Upper Sixth players, in our Leavers Recital on Monday 21st May.
