Music at Millfield 07/05 – The Review

After the summer term in the Music School started off with the exciting performances of Tenebrae in our International Concert Series and Camerata in Wells Cathedral, the ensembles of Millfield came together for the department’s collaborative concert, Music at Millfield. In this concert, all of the school’s musical groups performed in a showcase of the diversity of talent at Millfield.

The Jazz Band opened up the concert with a bang, swinging the music of Duke Ellington and Ronald Bell with great energy and excitement. The ensemble then showed their lighter side, accompanying the smooth vocals of Greg Wills singing ‘What A Wonderful World’ with style.

The String Orchestra then performed an Elegie by Tchaikovsky, displaying fabulous technique and producing a beautiful, rich sound. Following this was the Brass Ensemble, who produced a cool performance of Henry Mancini’s classic theme for the Pink Panther.

The next act was the Junior Choir, who displayed fabulous energy and skill in their performances. They first gave an impassioned rendition of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, followed by an exciting and intricate performance of a vocal arrangement of ‘Libertango’, showing the fantastic talent of the choir.

The Percussion Ensemble followed with a fascinating Timpani Concerto by John Beck. The rhythmic dexterity the group showed was impressive, combined with the awareness of timbres and musicality. Next was Camerata, who sang a variety of music from recent concerts from memory. The choir performed a variety of sacred repertoire by Stanford, Bruckner and Parry with fantastic quality and awareness of ensemble.

Closing the night was the Millfield Orchestra with a performance of the notoriously fiendish finale of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. The work requires high levels of energy, concentration and a lot of skill to carry it off, and the Orchestra displayed these qualities in abundance. It was a fitting conclusion to a fabulous night, well received by a large audience who gave the ensemble a rousing ovation at the end of the concert. The Music School will be looking forward to another fabulous evening in the upcoming Evening Recital, taking place on Monday 14th May.
