Johnson Session 17/03 – The Review

After a fantastic week of music making including the Choral Concert in Wells Cathedral, the Music School finished another busy 7 days with a highlight of the concert programme – a Saturday night Johnson Session. In a lively evening, an excited audience headed to the Johnson Hall, looking forward to a showcase of the talented performers, songwriters and bands currently at the school.

Many of the excellent soloists sang covers of a wide variety of tunes; Laila did a chilled and stylish Jackson 5 cover, Louis peformed Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ with beautiful tone and musicality, Esme sang a powerful Adele cover and Caitlin sang the Keane classic ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, accompanied superbly at the piano by brother Connor.

Other solists showed off their songwriting skills, playing their own tracks to the crowd with great skill. Highlights included Laura and Harvey accompanying themselves at the piano, and Oska with another energetic and stylish original on the guitar.

At the ends of the sets, some of Millfield’s bands came together for an exciting collection of covers. To finish the first half, Isaac, Luca and Alex thrashed out a brilliant System of a Down number, bringing a terrific reaction from the crowd. Two classics opened and closed the second set; Harry, Isaac, Connor, Tom and Miles started with a couple of energetic tunes of classics made famous by the Sex Pistols, whilst Will W, Will R, Isaac and Harvey ended the night with a brilliant rendition of ‘Purple Rain’, as made famous by Prince.

As the audience left the Music School at the end of the evening, many commented on the exceptional quality of the songwriting and performing on show, combining for a night that will live long in the memory. The Music School is looking forward to seeing more student creativity in the Composition and Chamber Music Concert on the evening of Monday 26th May in the Johnson Hall.
