Exam season is the opportunity for new faces to start their recital careers, and this is exactly what we saw at the final Evening Recital of the academic year. Debuts were made on voice, piano, and marimba in a concert that mixed up established performers and up-and-coming talent, especially from among Year 9. Vocalists continued to shine as one of the biggest strengths of music at Millfield, with repertoire ranging from Baroque arias to late twentieth-century musical theatre in the crowd-pleasing numbers from Evita and Les Misèrables. It is pleasing to see that students are interested in diversifying the musical styles they perform. The technical skill involved in many of the performances was testament to the hard work that the students have been putting in over the last term. Next year’s recital series looks to be very promising based on the talent that was on display in this concert.
