What’s been happening this term, and what’s coming up…

It has been another exceptionally busy term for Millfield Music School, and there is still much more to come. Besides all of the concerts that have been reported here, our students have been involved in competitions, public events, co-curricular projects and exams.

Our resident piano trio, Nikos, Robbie, and Alex, have progressed in the Pro Corda Chamber Music Competition, a national competition of small ensembles of all school ages. The boys sailed through the first round, and competed in the semi-final yesterday. Later this month, Nikos, Robbie, and Alex will also be competing with many other Millfield students in the Mid-Somerset Festival, held in Bath. Good luck to everyone entered in either competition!

ABRSM and Trinity performance exams are also coming up before the end of term, with dates now set and preparations going full steam ahead. Our students are having to prepare in amongst the other major events of the end of term, so the very best of luck to them all.

High School Musical was a big fixture of this term, which saw a whole host of Music Scholars and regular performers involved in lead and supporting roles, as well as in the band. More recently, Camerata have been performing as part of the latest Open Day and a conference held at Millfield for independent school registrars. Both performances received lovely comments and reinforced Camerata’s reputation as a very exciting ensemble within the Music School.

BTEC students got their moment in the spotlight too this term, by organising a “live lounge” style concert, where they invited student singer-songwriters to perform and chat about how they write their own music. The evening was a massive success, and if you missed it, don’t worry: the whole evening is being created into a podcast that will be released to the public very soon.

Co-curricular music has also been enjoyed by Year 9, who have been working on a variety of projects this term. Last term’s samba band was so successful that the band has continued with new students this term, while others are writing club tracks or film trailer soundtracks. Next week’s Co-curricular evening will be a great occasion to show off all their hard work.

But, term is not over, so watch this space for two of the most exciting concerts of the year: the Wells Choral Concert, performing Mozart’s Requiem, and the Concerto Concert.
