The first Open Musician’s Platform of the new year was a display, in particular, of the vocal talents of Millfield students. However, in no way was the abundance of singers lacking in variety: styles and genres from Debussy to Frank Sinatra were covered, and more singers than ever before chose to sing in foreign languages. Last night’s concert was also an opportunity for the arguably neglected genre of minimalism to take centre stage, with a performance of Steve Reich’s Piano Phase, an immensely challenging piece that sees two performers play an identical pattern first in time with one another and then gradually changing tempo. A hypnotic, ever-changing haze of sound was created, and truly showed the talent of our instrumentalists alongside our excellent singers.
